God save the Queen, Ode to Lady Evening Primrose!

What is Evening Primrose?

A plant whose flowers open at nightfall: a biennial plant with hairy leaves and seeds that yield an oil used especially in treatments for menstrual problems.

Evening primrose has been used in alternative medicine as an aid in treating heart disease, high cholesterol, circulation problems, premenstrual syndrome, endometriosis, breast pain, certain symptoms of menopause, eczema, psoriasis, acne, osteoporosis, and multiple sclerosis. It has also been used in cancer, Alzheimer's disease, asthma, diabetes, hyperactivity, and stomach or intestinal disorders.

Where it's magic lies is in it's high concentration of a fatty acid called GLA and it is this fatty acid that is largely responsible for the remarkable healing properties of the plant. In fact, Evening Primrose contains one of the highest concentrations known of this important substance and only a few other plants contain it at all. This makes Evening Primrose an important medicinal herb, and as studies continue, the list of benefits will likely become much longer. The gamma-linoleic acid, linoleic acid and other nutrients in this oil are essential for cell structure and improve the elasticity of the skin. These fatty acids also help to regulate hormones and improve nerve function aiding problems ranging from PMS to migraine headaches. The hormone balancing effect contributes to healthy breast tissue.

What I love it for is:

Um well first I just love the name.  Probably would have named my daughter Primrose if my husband would have let me.  But besides that:

Evening primrose oil appears to be its ability to treat dry, scaly, or itchy skin conditions, such as rosacea, acne and atopic dermatitis. I notice a very big difference in my skins coloring and texture when I am using Primrose oil!   It also reportedly, has some modest benefits for eczema which I  have had since I was a child and both my girls also have. In addition, I have read that evening primrose oil may also help clear skin allergies, rashes and even prevent pores from becoming clogged.  But where Evening Primrose has my heart is in it's ability to help me personally with my monthly  Endometriosis!  I have noticed that if I am paying attention and take it a few days prior and 3 days post my menstruation cycle I have less painful cramps the first 2 days!  Which those are normally my doubled over in pain days!  I still feel the achy fever feelings, but not the almost child birth contraction like cramps that I am used to!  Also because during ovulation one tends to get acne or an occasional pimple that does not occur when I am using the evening primrose!  Equaling winning!  Now everyone is different, but for me it works.  And it just really helps with those unbearable days for me, instead of taking Vicodin like my doctor prescribes!

You should not use this product if you are allergic to evening primrose.
Do not take evening primrose without the advice of a doctor if you have:
  • epilepsy or a seizure disorder;
  • schizophrenia;
  • a bleeding or blood-clotting disorder; or
  • if you plan to have any type of surgery.
It is not known whether evening primrose is harmful to an unborn baby. Do not use this product without talking to a healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

 Prim Rose Recipes:
So now you have the capsules or oil, now on to the fun stuff what to do with them.  Other than taking as a supplement, here are a few great things to make that will keep you looking great!

Apricot Primrose Wrinkle Serum
  • 2 tbsp apricot oil
  • 1 capsule pure essential evening primrose oil
  • 10 drops pure essential carrot seed oil

Pour apricot oil into a small dark glass bottle dropper. Pierce capsule of primrose oil and squeeze into the bottle. Add drops of carrot seed essential oil. Shake well. Place two drops under each eye and tap to spread. Don't get into eyes. It will keep for 6 months if stored in a dark, cool place.

Tea Tree Primrose Acne Serum

6 drops of Evening Primrose Oil
2/3 drops of tea tree oil

Add drops into a dark amber bottle, store in a cool place.  Shake before use. This is a great recipe for those once and awhile pimples.  Stick a drop on blemish and keep dry and watch nature take it's course!

Jojoba Primrose Massage oil

5 primrose capsules
2 cups Jojoba oil
2 drops lavender or rose essential oil I have also used lemon

This is a divine massage oil, it can also be an bath or after bath oil!  Makes skin super soft and dreamy!  Add all ingredients to a large plastic Peri bottle.  Store in cool place, lasts up to a year!

Evening Primrose PMS Tea

Directions for tea: Using a tea-ball or bag, put a tablespoon or so in hot water and steep for 5-6 minutes. Add honey or sweetener to taste.

Evening Primrose has been used for centuries for easing PMS and menopausal symptoms, and helps calm the nerves. I make my tea by picking the leaves and flowers of the plant and drying them.  This tea is divine for Menstrual cramps and aches, sweetened with some agave or Honey!

Obviously like everything one should only use if healthy and if okay-ed by your physician ( Although again they don't really learn about herbal supplements in med school so they will most likely have to do research and get back to you)  LOL!  The same type of research you probably will already do before trying!  But if you are healthy and want to try, I am sure that you will be amazed by the effects!  Wouldn't it be grand to pick your medicines from your backyard! It will be a lot cheaper at least!  Happy Herbing and Tread Lightly!
