Since getting to drink and be a wild child is something I left behind in my 20's... Sad because they were so fun... :) But Thank God!!! I have learned at the ripe age of 32 what things I can and can't drink... According to my calculations here is my booze run down.. ;) Beer makes me bloated and fartty!! And makes me tired, I just want to sit around and eat chips... Not so good for someone trying to lose all this baby fat!! ;) Do to the fact that I am a nursing mommy liquor is pretty much out of the equation for me... And I must say that is not a terrible thing seeings how clear liquor makes me full of piss and vinegar, I.E. I could tend to be annoyingly happy or a tad sassy.... The brown stuff such as whiskey makes me a happy go lucky gal, with a tinge of head case ;) Just a tinge!!!! But still no one needs a head case am I right... ;).. Soooooo pretty much I am not allowed to drink any of that shit because it is bad for me and goes straight to my dome ;)..... Now wine on the other had makes me pretty mellow, and that is probably the best way to handle me.... ;) . Now that I am a mom I feel that it is super important to take good care of my internal organs so with that said booze doesn't fit the bill!!! When I do occasionally indulge as in holidays or special occasions I now limit myself to 1 or 2 glasses.. I have a pal that we called two drink Sandy and now I get it.. ;) Two glasses makes me feel warm and that is enough for me... As a mommy I ain't got the time for a hang over.. Not like the old days where we could sit on the couch watching movies all day, driving thru jimboys for bean burritos or going to willies for a grilled cheese and fries... mMMMMMMMmmm willies ;) Although wine is my new drink of choice I am a tad limited to vegan... I am finding that what I once thought might be a problem is turning out to be a super fun activity. It's fun trying new ones and finding a diamond in the ruff...
Why a ton of wines are not vegan:
While animals are not being slaughtered for wine I do realize.... ;) Some wines are made with egg whites to promote clarity, while others use animal-based gelatin to remove particulates. And the process of making wine attracts fruit flies, and a few of the pesky critters may find their way into the fermentation tanks.
Wine is clarified, or cleared, after fermentation. Some of the ingredients used include:
- edible gelatins (made from bones)
- isinglass (made from the swim bladders of fish)
- casein and potassium caseinate (milk proteins)
- animal albumin (egg albumin and dried blood powder)
When buying wine finding organic, vegan and low or no added sulfate will be less damaging to the planet and the body!!!!
Back in the day when turning water into wine was not necessarily an uncommon practice, filtration devices were rather limited. And being the resourceful species that we tend to think we are, left-over fish bladders and bone parts seemed to be reasonable options for removing chunks of grape skin or barley bits. We turn practices into "traditions" when really they may be little more than banal systems that probably grossed out our ancestors too. These "traditions" are still in use, and full-blown industries—destructive to the oceans and the environment, not to mention the innocent animals essentially turned into teabags.
Just because a wine is organic does not mean it's vegan. You know what they say about assuming…
Sulfate in wine
Sulfites are typically added during winemaking to prevent bacterial growth and oxidation. In sulfite-free wine, no sulfites can be added to the wine during the winemaking process, although they are naturally produced in the fermentation process. So, there is technically no such thing as a sulfite-free organic wine.
Here is a list of some that are added and just don't sound fun for me to consuming I am just sayin ;)
Sulfur dioxide
Potassium bisulfite
Sodium bisulfite
Copper sulfate
Just a little side note:
For people who think that they may be allergic or have a sulfate allergy of any kind, drinking wine should just not be your vice... Many have this and don't even know it...
Many people have complained over the years about the taste of wines with no added sulfites. This is what has prevented organic wines from flying off the shelves. But organic vineyards are doing better with this.
Although sulfite-free wines have a brown tint to them, organic wine lovers are touting the rich, true flavor of the wine when no sulfites are added. But, still others will swear that sulfite-free wine tastes like battery acid.
Since wine tasting is such a personal thing, only you can decide if you like the flavor of truly organic wine with no added sulfites. Many times the good organics never get to the wine shop shelves, but can be found at local restaurants and wineries. Since the nature of sulfite free wine is that it cannot sit for long periods of time without some spoilage, these untainted bouquets may never be for mass consumption.
