To kick things off I must say that from personal experience it is always a good idea to first rummage through the said friends registry! When I was a new mommy I was in need of the necessities, and that's all I wanted. Everyone is different, but it was so nice to have those things buttoned up so I could relax and move on to the fun stuff. Unless the mother to be is Bill Gates' wife or has been saving for their new baby for a very long time, the financial strain on a family from a new baby is sometimes felt by most new families. To me it seems like a far better idea to help the family out with what they need first, before what I want to give ;).....This is a super important thing that people rarely do anymore. The stuff they need is in the registry, and unless they have commissioned your craftiness or decorative eye it is so much more respectful to stick with the registry.
If your friend is a new mommy that has asked your expert earthy opinion these are some really great sites to register!!!! Another thing to mention is that buying less is way more, in the crazy swing, bouncer, exsersaucer, jumper, walker, department. Telling friends to hold back on buying these items is a great money saving suggestion.... I have a separate post all about pulling back on the new baby buying reins. My two daughters could not be anymore different, and all those things I bought were a waste of my money and the Earth's resources. It is best to wait until the baby comes for those things to see what kind of little creature you are working with..... For example one daughter loved the swing but one didn't, neither liked bouncer or exersaucer or anything else to be honest....
Green Registering!!!!
*The great thing about Amazon is that you can get pretty much everything now a days.... But there is the tricky shipping situation. All items charge shipping so if you are getting a few things it can create a problem. But for the bigger items it is still a great source

The ultimate green store has everything a new mom needs and you can be sure that the items are Earth friendly, can't go wrong. And shipping is a little more bearable since you can mix match and still get one shipping fee!!!!
